5. Registration
Registration varies from one university to another, however, it is extremely simple. Your university will send you information based on what you need to take the day and many documents will be scanned and sent to your university during the application process.
This can include a student visa (usually organized through your host university), language skills test (if applicable), a letter of acceptance from the institute, proof of health insurance, 2 passport photos and some type of identification .

Check the application deadline and the application requirements for your study abroad or internship program of interest. Plan to submit all required information before the deadline.
Create an account or log in to complete and submit the initial online study request abroad.
After 1-2 business days, log in to your MyIESabroad account to view and send the rest of the application requirements. You will also receive regular emails about deadlines and missing items.
Requirements to study abroad in Madrid
Eligibility requirements:
- 18 years old
- In good standing at your home school
- 2.75 GPA or bet
- 4 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent
- Enrolled in a Spanish course within the year prior to the program start date
- Sophomore, junior, or senior standing when the program begins – some local university courses may not be available to sophomores
Madrid Study Abroad Application Requirements:
Applications may be considered after the published deadline on a space available basis. It is important to note that late applicants may be required to submit a non-refundable confirmation deposit upon acceptance in order to secure a place in the program.
The following should be submitted in your MyIESabroad account after you have processed your application process
- Home School Authorization
Your on-campus study abroad advisor can either complete the Home School Authorization electronically through IES Abroad’s PartnerPortal system or by filling out the PDF form linked above. Consult your study abroad advisor to determine how they would prefer to complete your Home School Authorization. - Transcript(s) for each college/university you have attended since high school. If you have multiple transcripts, IES Abroad will average the GPAs for all colleges/universities you have attended and use that cumulative GPA when reviewing your application.
- Foreign Language Assessment
- Students attending higher education institutions outside of the U.S. may need to submit English language proficiency exam results.
Additional Requirements if Cumulative GPA is Below 2.75:
- Professor Recommendation Letter
Although there is no length requirement, the recommendation must indicate a professor’s opinion of the applicant’s academic ability to pursue university-level coursework in a foreign country, in addition to any information that would help IES Abroad gain a better understanding of the applicant. - Personal Academic Essay
Although there is no length requirement, the essay must address your GPA, any particular academic challenges faced, reasons you chose this IES Abroad program, and how it fits into your academic career.
Passport & Visa Requirements:
A passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the end date of the program, with at least two blank pages is required. log in to travel.state.gov to locate U.S. passport agencies in your area.
A student visa is required to enter Spain. Upon admission, you will receive more information about the application process and any related fees.
