History and Honours

History

The Uyo based football club frankly nicknamed The Promise Keepers was founded in the year 1996 following the need to use sporting activities in fostering peace and unity in Akwa Ibom State, while also ensuring that the youth are engaged in extra social activities.

Akwa United Football Club played in the lower league since inception, and made their first appearance in the top level league in the 2007-2008 football season.

In their debut season in the top flight of Nigerian league football, The Promise Keepers failed to keep their promise by not keeping a place on the log after series of embarrassing losses and enough goal “consumption”, thereby slumping down to relegation after just one top flight season.

In 2011, Akwa United Football Club got promoted to top flight football for the second time in the history of their existence, and have been able to keep a place in the league for seven consecutive years.

At the end of the 2017-2018 season, The promise keepers recorded an amazing 41 points in 24 matches which saw them finish second on the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) log, which is the highest they have ever finished.
