Overview of the Biography of Ooni of Ife

Just like other traditional rulers of other tribes and places in Nigeria, the Ile-Ife, a mini city which is in Ogun State has a very strong standing and well recognized traditional ruler. Ile-Ife is historically regarded as the birthplace of the Yoruba race and religion.

Mind you, it is reported that there are two traditional rulers in Nigeria that are well honored and recognized in every angle of Nigeria’s area of concern. There are the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo. But for the sake of this article, we are going to only focus on the Ooni of Ife.

The Ooni came into existence way back in many decades ago, where the people of the land needed a traditional ruler to help them in reaching their gods, lead them and direct them in all aspects of their lives. All the Ooni are traced back to Oduduwa in their line of succession. Oduduwa himself or Oodua as he is fondly called is accorded maximum respect because he is the father of all the Yoruba people.

Another of his sons, Omo N’Oba Edo Eweka I, became the first Oba of Benin Empire. Another became Osile, of Oke-Ona Egba. The Alaafin of Oyo is the son of Ooni of Ife. But this family has expanded to birth children from different states and traditions.

Ooni Lajamisan, who is another descendant of Oranmiyan is celebrated for opening a new history of Ife. The four actual Ruling Houses are named from Ooni Lafogido, Ooni Osinkola, Ooni Ogboru and Ooni Giesi. The first three were sons of Ooni.

The ruling House include: The Oshinkola House, Iremo (present) [as of 1957], the Giesi House, More, the Ogboru House, Ilare, the Lafogido House, Okerewe.

The birth of Ooni of Ife is often said to to have been designed and predicted by soothsayers .The current Ooni of Ife was named Enitan by his mother and Adeyeye by his grandfather.

Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi was born on October 17, 1974, to his parents; Oluropo an experienced broadcaster, and Wuraola Ogunwusi of the Giesi Royal House in Ile Ife.

The Ooni of Ife had his primary education in Subuola Memorial Nursery and Primary School Ibadan many years ago. He went further to attend the Loyola College Ibadan and later went to St. Peters Secondary School for his secondary education. He later went ahead to obtain a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy from The Polytechnic Ibadan where he had his tertiary education.

Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi is the third biological son of Oluropo who was his father, out of six children with 3 sisters. Adéyẹyè’s family – Giesi- was one of the four royal families in Ilé-Ifẹ̀ whose turn it was to produce a king. Being a prince from the family, Adéyẹyè won several competitions including one with his elder brother.
