CULT CLASSICS
One of the most atmospherically eerie works of American horror cinema, CARNIVAL OF SOULS is a B-movie cult classic that continues to inspire directors today. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece is the story of a young woman who goes along for the ride when some small-town Kansas hot-rodders hold a drag race and are forced off a bridge, plunging into the flooded river below. The sole survivor of the accident, Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) relocates to Salt Lake City – where she is repeatedly troubled by a bizarre apparition that beckons her to an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a modest budget, the film was intended to have the “look of a Bergman” and “feel of a Cocteau” and succeeds with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score.

CLASSIC MOVIES

“This beautiful film is the story of “Miss Mary” Coley an African-American midwife more than half a century ago in rural Georgia. Conceived as a demonstration film for “granny” midwives its production sponsored by the Georgia Department of Public Health All My Babies quickly transcended its initial purpose. It was used around the world by UNESCO and has become an enduring classic of non-fiction film.

ALL MY BABIES was written produced and directed by George C. Stoney in close collaboration with Mrs. Coley as well as with local public health doctors and nurses and shows the preparation for and home delivery of healthy babies in both relatively good and bad rural conditions among black families at that time.

The film is in addition both a deeply respectful portrait of “Miss Mary” who is revealed as an inspiring human being and a record of the actual living conditions of her patients.

Selected in 2002 by the Librarian of Congress as a “‘culturally historically and artistically significant work'” for permanent preservation in the National Film Registry.”

POLITICS
Black Nationalist pioneer and First Hero of Jamaica, Marcus Garvey is discussed by contemporaries, historians, family and friends. The film traces his early successes in organizing West Indian contract labor, to the phenomenal rise of his Universal Negro Improvement Association, which took America by storm in the 20s. Garvey was a victim of his own success – he threatened the establishment enough for the FBI to infiltrate the organization. After his imprisonment he returned to Jamaica, then went to London, where he died aged 53. A giant of black politics and the key philosopher of black pride, his story is told by activist Mariamne Samad, UNIA members Roy Carson and Ruth Prescott and commentators Vivian Durham, Beverly Hamilton, Prof Rupert Lewis, Prof David Garrow and Sam Clayton. The documentary has a specially performed soundtrack by the legendary Mystic Revelation of Rastafari band.

In 1970, a group of young American radicals called The Weathermen announced their intention to overthrow the U.S. government. Fueled by outrage over the Vietnam War and racism in America, they went underground later in the decade, bombing targets across the country that they felt symbolized the real violence that the government and capitalist power were wreaking throughout the world. Right now, across the country, our two major political parties are gearing up for a once-a-decade war whose winner will control Congress for the next ten years, and possibly more. There will be battles in every state, and each will be kept carefully hidden from the prying eyes of average voters who only become more disenchanted with their government with each meaningless election. Democrats and Republicans collude to keep these skirmishes private so that they can maintain total control over the ultimate political weapon: the ability to directly determine the outcome of elections. Why bother stuffing ballots when they can just draw districts? For the first time, GERRYMANDERING exposes the most effective form of manipulating elections short of outright fraud. After the 2010 Census is finished, will you know where your district went?

This inspiring documentary explores the great strides that Senegal has made to counter extremist Islamic movements, despite rampant terrorism in the neighboring countries of Mali, Nigeria and Libya. Much of this progress is attributable to the peaceful nature of Islam in Senegal, dominated as it is by the Suffi and Murid schools. But equally important are the powerful voices of women who oppose violence?who also seek to elevate their status as full participants in the national economy. While they strive to rid themselves of discriminatory traditional restrictions, they are working hard to seek equality and prosperity. This version of the film is in French with no subtitles. At the time of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the Mufti of Rwanda, the most respected Muslim leader in the country, issued a fatwa forbidding Muslims from participating in the killing of the Tutsi. As the country became a slaughterhouse, mosques became places of refuge where Muslims and Christians, Hutus and Tutsis came together to protect each other. KINYARWANDA is based on true accounts from survivors who took refuge at the Grand Mosque of Kigali and the madrassa of Nyanza. It recounts how the Imams opened the doors of the mosques to give refuge to the Tutsi and those Hutu who refused to participate in the killing. The film interweaves six different tales that together form one grand narrative that provides the most complex and real depiction yet presented of human resilience and life during the genocide. A refreshingly original fairytale, Randa Chahal Sabbag’s THE KITE follows sixteen-year-old Lamia – who must cross a border checkpoint between Lebanon and Israel to marry a cousin she has never met. Neither she, nor her betrothed, are eager to consummate a marriage to a virtual stranger. The situation is further complicated by Lamia’s surprising admission that she is also in love with the Israeli soldier guarding the border. Sabbag’s enchanting drama about marriage and tradition is underscored by delicate symbolism and artful references to politics of Lebanon’s annexed territories. Often regarded as the period in which The Rolling Stones recorded the finest music of their career, the years during which Mick Taylor was the fifth Stone remain the band’s golden age. Notably, on albums Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street the Stones’ sound changed as they developed new ideas and were informed by a range of new influence. SPLINTERS is the first feature length documentary film about the evolution of indigenous surfing in the developing nation of Papua New Guinea.  In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo. Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic. A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way. Filmed in cinema verité style, the film profiles several villagers in their quest to become professional surfers. Set at the crossroads of civilization in a land where cannibalism proceeded into the 20th century, the story is as much a tale of budding sportsmen chasing their dreams as it is the Old World fusing with the Modern World.

DOCUMENTARY
In both 2006 and 2010, Mentor, Ohio, was selected as one of the Top 100 Places to Live in the U.S. But over those five years, an alarming number of teens from this upper-class enclave committed suicide. Directed by Alix Lambert (Blue Bayou), MENTOR follows the families of two victims as they uncover a shocking history of bullying at Mentor High School. Sladjana Vidovic endured constant abuse beginning in the eighth grade: kids made fun of her name, her Croatian accent, her clothes and her perceived queerness. She also received nightly death threats. Her family sought help from the school?principals, counselors, nurses, security guards and the police all systematically failed to stop the bullying or create a safer environment. Sladjana hung herself at 16. Eric Mohat did not tell his parents about his daily physical abuse, of being called ?fag? and ?queer? at school. He was taunted into killing himself at 17. Their families then join forces to sue the school district?who pursue a policy of denial, destroy evidence and willfully refuse to address bullying at all. At its heart, this film poses a harrowing question: What tragedies will some endure to maintain the status quo, and what risks must we take to reclaim the future of a community in conflict?

The idealistic young lieutenant Pedro de Alencar; Clarissa Warren, the malicious little English girl; the shady dealer Penabranca; the vindictive Sergeant Francisco Xavier; and the lusty prostitute Martírio will all follow different paths to the lines of Torres, where the final battle will decide each of their fates.

Narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin, Never Surrender is an incredible and inspiring story of sacrifice, survival, heroism, and reconciliation. Two weeks after the Japanese marched through Manila in World War II, Lt. Edwin P. Ramsey led an offensive in the Philippine jungle that made history as the last mounted horse cavalry charge in U.S. military history. Later, after the fall of Bataan in spring 1942, Ramsey refused to surrender. He joined the Filipino resistance and rose to command more than 40,000 guerilla warriors. He became a hero to the Filipinos, a friend to every Filipino president of the next 40 years, and he went on to a successful career in international business. Living with his family in Japan for five years, Ramsey embraced his erstwhile enemies, seeking understanding rather than revenge, even befriending a business associate who helped plan the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Many people who live surrounded by ocean – just a few feet above sea level – never learn to swim. In May 2014, National Geographic “ocean hero” Jon Bowermaster organized a learn-to-swim camp on the island-nation of the Maldives for fifty third graders and twenty of their burka-clad mothers. In a place more threatened by global climate change and rising sea levels than almost anywhere on the planet, it is particularly important that its residents understand what?s at risk. Diving into the ocean is a big first step toward protecting what we know.

When you think of California, what images come to mind? Ocean? Beaches? Mountains? Healthy living? Hollywood? Beautiful people? All of these exist; they are not just stereotypes. But it is also true that California is the third-largest producer of oil and gas in the nation, with all the downsides and pollution that come with the fossil fuel industry. Drilling has been going on in California for more than one hundred years, and has left a trail of dirty air, polluted land and contaminated water up and down the Golden State. The state is currently led by four-term Governor Jerry Brown, who boasts green credentials going back to the 1970s. While he is an outspoken champion of reducing emissions that contribute to global warming, he is simultaneously a big promoter of California?s oil and gas industry. This film asks, Can you really be for both? Executive produced by Mark Ruffalo, DEAR GOVERNOR BROWN was written and directed by Jon Bowermaster.
