Google says it will use recycled materials in all of its hardware products by 2022

In an interview with Fast Company, Google said it had started using recycled plastic on Chromecast devices and used plastic bottles to create the fabric in Google Homes and in the boxes. The move follows Apple’s green initiative to use recycled materials in its products, and the company came to make an internal robot that disassembles the old hardware for the parts. Earlier this year, Samsung also announced a similar promise, promising to use sustainable materials in the packaging of its products.

In addition to using recycled materials, Google also said it would commit to making all its shipments carbon neutral by 2020 to promote sustainability in its hardware division. In an interview with Fast Company, Google’s hardware sustainability director Anna Meegan said the team was able to reduce emissions by 40 percent by switching from air cargo shipments. (The article is not clear about the period of time during which the reduction occurred.) That mission means that the team needs to better forecast its development and production process, since cargo shipments take longer than air.

If you wish to participate, Google currently has a recycling partnership program that will provide you with a shipping label to send Google devices that you no longer need. The program is currently limited to the United States.
